Tanganyika Docent Program
The Tanganyika Docent Program is for people who believe that we are responsible for being stewards of the earth’s rare and endangered species. To fulfill Tanganyika’s mission, we must have a significant impact on the lives of people by providing REAL experiences that are entertaining and educational.
Docents are assistant educators who share a passion for animals and for engaging students and adults in interactive experiences.
Docents can volunteer in various activities around the park, including our Education Programs, Camps & Classes, Animal Encounter Stations, Special Events, Office Projects, Animal Handling and Animal Care (Over 18). Some of these activities, like Animal Care, do require onsite training before you are eligible to participate.
Docents sign up for the activities and programs that fit their interests and schedule, so it’s a great flexible option for busy students and professionals alike.
We are looking for individuals with the following qualities:
- Good communication skills are a plus, but many volunteer paths don’t involve public speaking.
- Positive, self-motivated, and open-minded
- Flexible with the ability to adapt to changing situations
- Reflective and able to take constructive feedback
- Team player who enjoys working collaboratively
What do I need to know about the docent program?
- No prior animal knowledge is required, but for some activities, it is preferred.
- Docents must make a minimum commitment of 40 hours per year.
- Different groups of volunteers do not require a commitment like Special Event volunteers.
- Complete an interview and, if selected, go through the orientation.
- There is a fee of $25 when you begin. This fee goes towards your work shirt.
What are the rewards of becoming a docent?
- Connect with the Par4k on a deeper level while sharing your enthusiasm.
- Enjoy personal growth as you learn new skills and knowledge.
- Make new friends among fellow volunteers and staff.
- Give back to the community.
We do have some program requirements. By completing the application for a docent, you agree to the following.
- You will offer your services as a volunteer without expecting monetary compensation.
- You are at least 14 years of age.
- Follow all TWP policies and protocols.
- Attend all required trainings and meetings.
- If you cannot attend, you will communicate with the volunteer coordinator promptly before the meeting or training is to take place.
- You will find transportation to and from TWP.
